I mean they could be roommates. But when you see two men grocery shopping together should we automatically assume they are a gay couple? Depends - if there are multiples of anything 'party-like' then I don't. Multiple items of liquor, chips, ice cream, burgers, fruit, etc - nope, although they could still be.

I assume they're gay if it looks like they are doing things together and it isn't one guy doing all the work while both of them act like complete assholes, loud and obnoxious.

That generally means they're straight. I traipse into grocery stores quite a bit with female relative's husbands. This is usually to get something she missed. So no I don't assume anything. It's obvious when they're gay because gay men would be aware of their surroundings and other people whereas straight men don't give a shit because they're not used to having to need to pay attention otherwise get fucked over somehow.

It's so obvious it's silly. I saw two hetero guys shopping together a couple of months ago. One talked loudly, as if to signal to the other people in the store that he was indeed straight and wasn't bothered shopping with another man. The other was extremely uncomfortable and you could tell that he was really scared that someone would think that he was not straight just because he was out shopping with another dude.

No confidence. On other occasions guy friends go shopping together to buy stuff for their barbeque or man cave party or whatever and have no problem with it. We've ALL wondered if two men shopping together might be a couple. It's a perfectly normal thing to be curious about, to speculate on. Gurl these fitness whores, straight and otherwise eat all kinds of vegetables these days to maintain their perfect physiques.

Hon, being out and about in our daily lives and wondering if some guy or guys might be gay is something that ALL of us have done. It's perfectly normal.
